The internship program at the Roundhouse Marine Studies Lab and Aquarium provides students with a unique opportunity to gain practical work experience in the field of marine biology. Responsibilities of interns include:
· Public Education: educate the public about various aquaria/exhibits.
· Educational Program Assistance: assist marine educators during class fieldtrips and other educational programs, such as summer camp.
· Aquarist Assistance: help with maintenance of the tanks and animals.
Interns gain knowledge about the ocean and its inhabitants; learn the proper maintenance of aquariums and marine animals; acquire a plethora teaching experience and obtain valuable insight and hands-on experience.
1) Age Requirement: minimum of 18 years of age
2) Enrolled in a college or university
3) Dedicate a minimum of 8-10 hours per week for one semester
4) Proficient in writing and speaking the English language
5) SCUBA certification an advantage, but not required
Most internship positions are non-paid, but please ask the staff as we may have some paid positions available.

Roundhouse Summer Camp Educational Interns
Educational interns assist marine educators during summer camp sessions.
These educators will:
· Work with campers ages 4-13
· Assist in teaching marine biology and science to campers
· Gain valuable public speaking skills and basic marine knowledge
· Spend their summer days working indoors at the Roundhouse Aquarium and outdoors at the adjacent beach
· Assist in the creation of games and activities for campers
· Assist with basic set-up and take-down of camp
Requirements to intern:
· Minimum of 18 years of age
· Enrolled in a college or university
· Punctual, reliable and flexible
· Has an interest in marine science and education
· Experience as a strong swimmer, surfer and/or kayaker (not required)
· CPR and lifeguard certified an advantage
Program Dates: Summer Camp runs from July 7th- August 12th (including two mandatory intern training sessions in June). Interns are required to work a minimum of 80 hours. This can be in combination with aquarist maintenance.

Time: 8:30am-12:30pm
July 18th- 22nd
July 25th-29th
August 1st-5th
August 8th-12th
Wilderness Adventure Week (campers age 7-13)
Time: 8:30am-3:30pm
July 7th-15th
Roundhouse Aquarium Aquarist Interns
Aquarist interns assist the staff with tank maintenance and animal care.
These aquarist interns will:
Gain valuable marine science knowledge
Assist with food prep and tank maintenance
Feed the fish
Assist with general cleaning tasks
Act as a role model for the volunteers as well as assist the volunteer coordinator
Learn about native California marine species
Gain public speaking skills by conversing with the general public
Assist the staff with basic office tasks
Requirements to intern:
Minimum of 18 years of age
Enrolled in a college or university
Punctual, reliable and flexible
Has an interest in marine science and animal husbandry
Has no problems getting “fishy” including preparing fish food and assisting with tank maintenance
Takes initiative and can work well on his/her own or with a group
CPR and lifeguard certified an advantage
Program Dates:
The summer session runs from June 22nd to August 28th (including two mandatory intern training sessions in early June). Aquarist interns are required to work a minimum of 80 hours (including two mandatory training sessions in June) but can start earlier or stay longer, if desired. These hours can be in combination with summer camp sessions.
Aquarist intern schedules vary around the summer camp sessions and can be arranged based on availability and summer camp schedules.
